Astrophysicist and Artificial Intelligence scientist Dr. Matt Agnew has teamed up with The Leukaemia Foundation to be its ambassador for MISSION: POSSIBLE, the foundation’s latest campaign to raise awareness about World’s Greatest Shave 2022 (March 16th - 20th).

There are currently 110,000 Australians living with blood cancer. World’s Greatest Shave raises much needed funds for families impacted by blood cancer, as well as further research into the disease. Australians can donate to the cause and raise awareness by cutting, shaving or colouring their hair.

“I am a facts man, and the facts cannot be denied. More men are diagnosed with blood cancer – and sadly, more men lose their life to the disease. Yet fewer men than women are aware of what blood cancer is, or its symptoms. I am asking all Australians, and men in particular, to make it your mission this year to check for symptoms and to contact your GP if they persist," said Dr. Matt.

"The first step to defeating blood cancer is raising awareness and making Australians, particularly Australian men aware of the symptoms, which include recurrent infections, increased fatigue, night sweats, bone pain, unexplained weight loss, bruising and enlarged lymph nodes.”

Dr. Matt recently met with 9-year-old Noah who - at just 6-years old - was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a rare type of blood cancer. Similar to Dr. Matt, Noah considers himself a ‘Space Nerd’, and he spent the afternoon with Dr. Matt having all his space and science questions answered.

Dr. Matt is hoping to raise $30,000 for World’s Greatest Shave 2022, and will soon brave the shave himself by cutting his long hair. His locks will then be recycled and made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair during their cancer treatment.
