Astrophysicist Dr. Matt Agnew is the Maths Ambassador for NSW Education’s new Maths Trains Brains campaign, coinciding with the launch of the new Numeracy course that will be available across all NSW schools from 2022.

The campaign aims to highlight why mathematics is so important throughout all stages of life, with the new Numeracy course showing Year 11 and 12 students how mathematics and numeracy can be practically applied to everyday life and work beyond the classroom.

Dr. Matt joined Sarah Mitchell, NSW Minister for Education, in Sydney this week to launch the campaign.

Dr. Matt said: "I’m absolutely delighted to be on board as a Mathematics Ambassador with the NSW Department of Education’s Maths Trains Brains initiative!

Maths has been an integral (pardon the maths pun) part of my professional career, but it is important for a much more fundamental reason, that being one’s own confidence. Mathematical confidence is critical to help avoid feeling scared of, or just generally disoriented, around numbers. Maths can be intimidating, but we all deserve to feel comfortable and confident in the lives we lead and that means ensuring we have the functional numeracy skills to succeed."
